As I said, the little flaws are a non issue. But also acknowledging the fact that you have closer eyes can make you make them closer than they actually are. Either way it doesn't matter- its some nice arts you have here :]

This isn't a retort, but I actually have close-set eyes, that's not an anatomical mistake :/. The rest of the things you pointed out are dead on, and I've definitely taken note of them along with a few other nitpicks I have with it. I kind of ended up liking the imperfections, since part of the concept was that disintegration/reconstructing of self duality. In a way, the flaws are inherent in the concept and need just as much attention. I think the only one I would want to fix would be the eye size. I really think I should rework the bigger one to bring it down a bit. But you know, school projects and time constraints and all.

I intend to do at least another one in the same style of my good friend chris.

Yeah, so about that painting. One could go on for a while about a lot of little " mistakes" in it. Eyes too big, too close to each other, odd skewed nose and lip angles... but really- it doesn't matter. The way you have the blues of the shirt and your eyes appearing in the shadows, and the wispy hair and contour are just gorgeous. Lots of people paint nicely done heads, but much less often does someone paint a portrait- which you did.

Honestly one of the better portraits I've seen in a long time. There's a sense of unmistakable realism while the eyes also have a sense of character and originality that really gives it a fun little touch.

Well, it's finished. I'm really happy with it, it's definitely my best work to date. I made the horrible mistake of putting it beside the reference. BAD idea. Never do that when working in photorealism.

I'm doing an installation project tomorrow, so hopefully i can snag some pictures of that as well. Lemme know what you think yo.

I understand the idea, as this sort of structurally sound bold composition is used quite often. ( even asymetrical compositions we believe are really unique actually have a lot more in common with other pieces than we might think) and I guess I was just thinking that if you were half-assing the idea then you may as well go with a more interesting compositon- but you're not half assing the idea so you have to make the composition work. I believe if the triangle is meant to represent stability, then having the chaos imposed upon it and going into it's edges don't do a good job of visually showing that. Crisp clean lines and having the triangle one flat color would greatly enhance the visual battle between a flat area of color and energetic brush strokes trying to impose themselves upon it; and the visual must go along with what you are trying to say- it is not enough to have an idea, make a piece with that in mind, and think the idea will transmit itself through the artist to the painting to the viewer by magic. Sometimes we are lucky and it happens by accident, but that is often not the case.

Also, you have some "bands" of stronger, less broken color that are coming for the triangle, and I feel it would do good to the piece to try and enhance them. Actually you have a lot of " hinted" stronger shapes in the image that could be brought out. The brush strokes already create the chaos, so use these color shapes to clarify the direction of it's force- which is headed towards the triangle.

I haven't mentioned color in these posts because I don't see anything wrong- or something I think needs/could use improvement with what you have.

The centre is pivotal to the composition and thematic elements of the piece, as is the square composition. Part of the project was to create some sort of commentary using the symbol, and my aim was to create this tension between order and chaos, which is meant to mirror the internal and external forces and psychological struggles experienced by the individual. The triangle (not delta) is meant to represent the stability we as unique individual strive for amidst the bombardment of information and psyches every day, and the kind of pressure that imbues upon us.

Therefore, structure here is of the utmost importance, and having an asymmetrical composition would take away from my intended effect. I toyed with the idea of what you suggested, but I wanted it to feel more like the triangle is being surrounded on all sides. It would be interesting I think to play with positioning to maybe emphasize being backed into a corner by these senses, but for the sake of this project, I liked the central orientation.

This has definitely been a process and a matter of trial and error for sure. A lot of firsts are being incorporated here. If I were to have more time, I would probably make another one and try different things and such, but really I just don't have the time to experiment. This is due Monday. Thanks for the suggestion though man. They definitely came to mind as I came up with my final idea.

Also, some fun little progress animation:

You might punch me for this but why the center? It currently doesn't have the power of an "Iconic" composition, so perhaps a more asymetrically balanced composition may be better. Since abstract doesn't have a representational figure we can give ourselves an attachment to, the artist needs to focus even more on composition as the piece is non objective. Now, Delta is fucking cool, and its obvious like a " signature" symbol for you ( mine is the lovely omega :3) but you should attribute a relationship to this symbol and try and represent to us what that is. Perhaps use what you have as a base, and maybe put a glaze over all of this so that the current delta is only partially concealed? ghost images like that can be interesting- let the process and " mistakes" and alterations work for you.

Ret, I've reworked the bum area to make the crack more apparent, but it still isn't apparent in the photo. When you see it in person, it's more apparent. The photo still doesn't show it, simply because my camera simply can't capture those subtle details.

And yeah, I'm going to The University of Western Ontario (UWO) in London, Ontario Canada. I'm almost done now though, in my final year. I'll be applying for an MFA soon.

Oh yes, I know the glow is much easier said than done. My advice would be to use a warm white and paint that very thickly, and use glazes for the shadows. If it were me I would use a glaze on the entire figure, then wipe it away from the light areas, and use the thin layer of oil left to let the brush glide while applying the highlights.
Your newest painting has some nice color work and brushstrokes but the proportions seem a tad off.
good luck on the painting.

Oh yeah, suppose I shoulda mentioned, yeah, it's Oil forgottenfigure.

Getting the figure exact has been challenging, and I've been working hard to achieve that watery glow that was so lovely in the reference, but it's sometimes easier said than done, and I still have a lot of little things to do to try and achieve that. Also I guess it would be important to note that her forearm, hand and bottom right corner is the most unfinished of the whole thing. I do still need to do some significant rendering on that to make the foreshortening work properly.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I appreciate it.

Also, this was from a figure painting session done back at the beginning of term. 6 hours, oil on one of the canvas boards.

However, it seems as though she holds a certain expression in that reference that's somewhat absent from the painting; I agree with forgottenfigure about the glow, it seems to be coming from the backside in the reference. However, you might be trying to deviate from the original for your own artistic touch, so just keep us updated!

Is this in oil or acrylic? I believe the figure could benefit from more accurately trying to reproduce the values and colors of the reference. She's got that glow that is less apparent in your painting. You do have some nice color subtleties in your painting that would be nice to keep though. Also look at how the forearm is modeled in the reference, the values there keep it from looking disfigured where as yours looks much to short as opposed to in perspective.
Overall very good work for only 2 weeks worth of time!
