So I was asked to contribute to the next show at the gallery I'm doing an internship at, topic "Secret Service" as the first part of a series of shows under the comprehensive theme "post-democracy".

After some research I decided to go for a series of 5 portraits of the so-called Cambridge Five, a double agent spy ring during the WWII period. They had quite some freakish stuff going on, one of them having been on his way to being head of the MI6 while also being on a first-name-basis with Stalin, and another one being the British representative on the American-British-Canadian council on the sharing of atomic secrets at the peak of his western career.

Here are the first two, more interesting ones, as the first had the most interesting career and the second never being confirmed, thus allowing for some trickery :).

To see the intended effect, get red foil or glasses or look through just the red side of those old 3D-glasses.

Still not sure about how much I should enforce consistency. Philby looks nicer if the head isn't as saturated as Cairncross', but for Cairncross it is necessary for the blurred second identity to take effect, while Philby stays the same all along. Erm, I'll let you know what becomes of it, need to get it done today :)

Cheers guys, sorry that you don't get to hear much from me anymore. I cannot even tell the exact reason, but the Internet thing doesn't work for me anymore like it used to for some reason.

edit: the others are basically done, though the colors still need matching, the portraits cleaning and the type some order (not happy with McLean especially). There's also less happening when switching the images unfortunately, but I wanted to do the whole series nonetheless.

I'm at a loss. You're so far ahead of me and most others that I feel silly even commenting. Why would a god care what a man has to say?

Less melodramatically: you have skill and ideas; go get money and reknown.

Uhm, thanks :). But it's a silly thing to say still and now you make me struggle not go all 'but I feel like I suck so bad all the time' on you.

I do have my gripes with the series, especially when it comes to the consistency of the penciling. And speaking of that, I find drawing off of photographic references (copying that is) a rather boring thing to do and to look at, but was comfortable enough with it if that meant I'd get it done in time.
Heh, it was also nice to see how the others here doing pieces for Saturday basically were like 'Ah, now I know what I want to do - wait a second.. Done! What do you think of it?' while it took me a week to get the 5 portraits done :) For some reason I never open the sketchbook twice a day.

Fucking excellent. The John Carncross effect is pretty badass... I would've liked to see more of that kind of thing on the other portraits but I guess it wasn't really possible. And it might have come off cheesy.
I like spies. I will read up on these guys now.

    Hey, thanks guys :)

Zach: I completely agree, I changed the light situation on these a bit so they'd fit in better with the rest, but it didn't turn out the way I wanted. But I just printed and framed them yesterday night and they actually look nice as all physical and in a row. I'm curious whether people will get it without explaining it, I'll dress up as a waiter and keep peeking over their shoulders and maybe bug the pictures and make me a newspaper with a peeping hole.

Oh, and I'll be sure to post some pictures of them tomorrow.

Also, Ehtan, do read up on them, their lives had more craziness to offer than fiction could ever do it justice.
