Ugh ... senior year. Just a few things I have done so far.

I had a sketch of this and was really excited to do a finished piece from it ... but it has no meaning and I'm trying to give it one. Help!

    Gender identity "disorder".

A poster for Y tu Mama Tambien

An earth day sort of thing ... NOT the band ...

I'm not sure how dark/light these are, I really need a desktop mac. I hope you guys enjoy everything :) Although I wont be changing anything, Critique is also welcome ... unless it is about color, lol.

Very nice Darion, good to see your stuff again!

One thing I would watch for is the flatness of the image, particularly in the second one. For the others, they're very graphic and therefore it's not really an issue, but the second one kind of has this awkward perspective being created by the shadow running across the ground, which doesn't seem to be working very well. The pattern on the floor and lockers aren't helping much either, they're really messing with this image and making it flat, which to me is a deterring factor. I would say that it might benefit from a simpler look, take out the pattern in the floor and on the lockers perhaps, or at least just keep that in mind when working on future projects.

Otherwise, the colours are lovely, and I really like the first one you posted, although I really can't help you with giving it meaning and significance.

Art doesn't necessarily have to have one particular meaning attached to it. Let the audience decide what the meaning is, they will undoubtedly find something in it that connects to them and therefore will hold more significance than many pieces you will do that DO have a specific intent.

@Quark: I do respect your opinion, but I was going for the flat and graphic quality in that image aswell ... I'm inspired by the ideas and design of graphic designers. I try to build my pieces on a geometric or modular foundation. So I always obey the structure of my design before perspective. Hopefully I don't sound like an ass - I just want to clarify that the flatness was intentional. Ken Garduno also has a warped and basic interpretation of perspective that I like too, you should look at his work.

@Forgotten: Yes, I definitely agree ... but in the business world, it's outstanding that you have your own language when accurately portraying an idea. Art directors love great ideas and I want to work in editorial/advertising/etc so I want to embrace that more.

Oh, I'm all for the flat graphic quality, and you work it well. I was just offering up that if you start to encorporate perspective, consider whether it's helping or hindering the piece. My biggest gripe were the floor and wall patterns for that particular one, I think it would work better graphically and perpective-wise without them. It's still a fantastic piece.

I'll be sure to check out Ken Garduno

Darion, you are killing it, I always knew you were going to be the one from the little group of friends that would rock it big time, im absolutely seeing you rocking with this stuff on IDN or very classy publications, the first 2 are absolutely brilliant. I would put the first one on a cover of a very seductive album.

As for the "Y tu mama tambien" poster, wonderful interpretation of that movie, haha such a mess, i really enjoyed that movie.. You should check "Temporada de patos" if you liked Y tu mama tambien..

The last one is pretty nice, I would personally tune up the colors a bit. (IMO)

    Post some more!

@David: Oh idk, I have no idea what school he goes to.

@Gnarf: Thanks thanks! I hate typical pallets (monochromatic, green green for grass, etc) so I'm always jazzing the colors up to make it interesting. So thats great to hear :) Did you ever get to that school in San Francisco?

@Miguel: Thanks Miguel :) You know I've always respected you highly as an amazing designer, you know I love your shit too and I want to see some new stuff :D

LOL ... yeah, that was a very gross and trashy movie, but it was directed soo well. I loved it so I will def check that other movie out!

Yeah, I should've lightened and saturated it a tad bit. My professor actually darkened the poster for print too, because it would come out light ... but it came out dark, lol. Yeah, I need a desktop ... I can never tell how light-dark it really is.

I'll try and see what else I can dig up ... I'm trying to do an illustration every weekend, so I know that much. You guys gotta give me your yahoo contacts!

your neat style seems to never change, you're just tightening everything up and using it in more interesting ways

Lol, I know, I feel the same way Zach ... It is very basic. I wanted a very direct idea and connection with the viewer. My professor ALWAYS mentions my egon shielle-like hands, lol ... so thats funny. Thanks :) I'll have some more soon

yup, i got in. the only problem is that it's a ripoff and it's full of arrogant assholes. :[

i can complain about it all day, but i'll leave it at that.

btw, when you pic your colors, do you think about the harmony or is it subconscious. i'd love to use colors the way you do, but the problem i get is that i have to think about every single color i use. i feel like no other artist does that, like it just comes to them or something.

Ugh ... I think every art school has its issues. Mine is full of awkward people. Most ppl who can barely draw a hand have gotten through their life-drawing classes and into their concentration curriculum ... I don't get it. But yeah, I know how you feel, I have so many issues with SCAD, too.

Both, kinda ... Initially, I usually know what colors I'm gonna use ... but most of the time I go back and just play with them to see if I can get something more interesting, even if its not a "good" color scheme. I try to keep in mind to use saturated, light and warm colors to stand out specific parts of the image ...

This is what the first one looked like at one point. I wanted the face to be the focal point of the image, so I made him a red to stand out against the blue background ... as you see in the other version, it doesn't really have the same affect. The background overwhelms the figure ... it almost moves your eye "around" the face and doesn't move you "to" the face. So in turn, initially it was probably technically better ... I do like it, but I liked the color combinations better in the more recent one ... I should probably stick with the first one.

Comps help a lot too ... I always do comps ... I know they are annoying as hell, but even if you have one it makes the direction such a breeze. Atleast at that point, you know your lights, darks or your focal point. I'd use NOTAN, too.

haha too many people around my school that are like that. i know people who've spent about $80k already and still are having a tough time getting anywhere.

thanks for the explanation too man, it's pretty awesome to see the process and it totally makes sense. as for comps, sometimes things like that become too organized for me, i don't really feel too comfortable working halfway into the piece.

oh and i believe you and ff are destined to be friends. punaji's small, so there's no way it was just a coincidence.

The first two, man, they are really out there. Seriously if I saw them randomly on the internet I'd think you were some crazy genius illustrator from the 60s who's basement had just been raided, exposed, and shared. They're just fucking awesome, original, colours are great, and most of all
makes me feel like reading childrens books and nostalgic about rocky and bull winkle.

That said, after reading the caption for the second one it sort of makes me like it less? I don't mean to sound cynical, but that's the sort of idea that makes me think "who the fuck cares. stop thinking." But like, more directed at those who would relate with that problem. It's just so strong on it's own... and I get something way different from it.

I'd like to see more. Fuck they look good.

@forgottenfigure Lol ... yes, I am at SCAD and have major issues with it. Obviously too expensive, not enough classes (higher classes) and they are greedy as fuck ... but I've learned a lot so I think it was worth it ... parking is ridiculous this year too. But yeah, you can look me up on fb. Wait, which one are you at ... there are like 4?

@gnarf Definitely understand that, organization can be the devil

@scott LOL, that imagination of yours has me smiling: it felt really good that you noted what I try to emphasize the most. Thanks :) I really appreciate it.

And I completely understand where you're coming from ... I'm only trying to put more "idea" based work in my portfolio because I want to be more directed toward editorial/advertising work - clients will be able to see how I interpret ideas. I agree though, I like creating illustrations on what is interesting, awkward or beautiful ... I like the freedom. Basically, my plan is to start off in editorial/advertising to promote my work and ideas ... hopefully being able to stop doing that and have most of my income selling prints/paintings and less editorial work ... So it's really just a part of a plan to promote my work. Hopefully I'll have a solo-show soon. I can't stand when ppl complain about art that has no meaning.

I have more stuff, but I'm just gonna wait until this weekend, I don't want to keep bumping the thread with single pieces.
