    hey, long time no post.
i'll keep updating this thread with work from this new exhibition i'm working on as i get things scanned. cool.
    edit;
the show is called "my kingdom, not yours"
it's kind of like a "fuck you" to my residency experience, being told
what and how to draw, and for what kind of people. this being my first
polished off solo thing, it's basically just a self narrative of the things i enjoy drawing and heaps of experimenting. if anyone is in melbourne on the 30th, come check it outttt. should be fun.
it's also hopefully my ticket off this island. x_x

    Wow. HOLY FUCK indeed.

Y'know what this really reminds me of? Those concept drawings that were always done for the Final Fantasy series by Yoshitaka Amano. He did a lot of amazing watercolor artwork that has this same feel to it. Really amazing man, so great.

EDIT: Also: I would love to know your process for this one. Did it start with watercolour that moved onto ink, did the ink come first and then the watercolour, some back-and-forth style, or what? There are a lot of complex interactions going on between the two mediums.

But for real, this is pretty awesome, I can't say amazing because I've seen you do it before and this piece would have to be just a teensy bit more awesome to really wow me again, and thats only because im a fan of your work and think your style is super cool.
Lets see you keep taking this farther, work bigger( although I don't know how big this is) and make a piece that even you look back and say " wow, I can't believe I did that"

And not to often do I find an artist that puts a meaning behind is work that doesn't sound like bullshit.

    cheers guys.

quark: that's a pretty cool thing, because basically Amano is my goddamn hero. <3
i started out with the ink, and then as i did it took into consideration what areas i would leave less detailed for more colour work, but i didn't start colouring at all until i finished drawing it.

ff: i totally get what you're saying. the size is pretty small, A4, but i think i was most happy with this one because it's the most detail i've put into anything, and tried to get some movement in it. but the whole maximum detail thing and these characters are getting tiresome, i agree. i suppose my problem with taking this to a larger scale would be lack of time and funds, and to survive i have to keep the detailed work super small and then as i get big it turns into more simple characters.
i'll try and get some of the other stuff scanned tonight before i frame this weekend, a lot of it is using people and animal references and distorting certain features. fuuuun.

and agreed about the meaning behind work. it's really difficult trying to show work, because i'm always expected to explain it, have a theme, etc etc. and so far i never have had a serious description or bio, like sometimes they just say "acorn is from canada and knows celine dion." bleh. so that's why this show is "no, it's mine, not explaining it, just look."
man, i really just post up some of the shit i went through at the residency. one morning i was woken up to the guy who ran it blasting shitty pop and sniffing speed in the living room, so i got up to have a joint and a coffee. the guy proceeded to give me a lecture about telling "all my peers to fuck off and transcend to a professional artist." such a twat.

anyways, thanks for that honesty, <3.

this is gorgeous man. i agree with ff about the meaning, you really kept it real without getting into philosophy and bs. i love this piece tho, so much style that you could really call your own.

explaining artwork sucks, especially writing artist statements. but i think people really want something to say to you about your work. something about small talk, but then it feels like by the end of the conversation, you either never see that person again or they forgot. i'd just save my breath. i had an instructor who was working on his own film and got really tired of explaining it to people that now he tells them something along those lines: "no, it's mine, not explaining it, just look."

To digress, you can blame Dadaists and Modern artists for that one. People used to make art for specific reasons like, "God is Great", and that was it. And then people starting getting shittier and shittier art into galleries, and people lost sight of the fact that sometimes the reason is simple and straightforward, like "I enjoy pen and ink a lot" and stuff. I hate how much my art professor this year belittled personal choice that wasn't founded by some profound theory.

I could go on for pages about my problems with the "fine arts" community, but I don't want to overrun this thread with that.

Getting tiresome? if you meant that as if the audience ( me) is getting tired of seeing this stuff, then definitely not true! you actually have more movement in this than any of your other pieces, the horn things and flowing ribbons especially- maybe try and incorporate such motifs more in your work? if you want of course, just a suggestion.

You cant just throw this up and act like its not something to talk about, whats the story?

This is fantastic, do you have more pictures of the space?

    Posted 9 months ago #

holy SHIT. you really went all out on that space man, makes me super jealous to see it. So much work must've gone into that, I definitely can't wait to see the works you had displayed.

Have you already had a show and stuff, and if so, how did it go? Did people orgasm upon arrival, or before even stepping in the door.

ret: i guess it's just a look into the things i think about. it's nothing specific, i just wanted things to look good and the space as if you had walked into one of the drawings.

quark: the show went really well, it's sorted me out for awhile and the amount of work the went into it paid off. seriously, i didn't go out for 2 months at all. heaps of 40 hour grinding sessions. there was a preview night where it was less of a hipster thing which was nice and sold work that night which helped get the ball rolling on the opening night.

    gnarf: embarassing.
