Holy fucking hell, that keyblade is like perfect... Screw you you talentful ass you.
Those paintings are damn nice too.
All the images are a little big though, even for my already big screen, so maybe in the future (since this is a huge post) resize them a bit to fit the screen better.
Nothing but jealousy and gay fanboy love.
quark: haha it might LOOK perfect from afar but it looks like shit close up imo, I could do a better one now. I did that one on less than a weeks notice!
haha thanks, yeah after I uploaded them I realized they're really big, sorry about that :P any updates will be done with smaller images yes.
the arm on that first one is really.... uhh... bendy
pretty messed up imo, but the rendering is very nice
what'd you make that keyblade out of?
assignment?
you're getting painterly and it's really surprising how quick you're picking it up and painting so effectively
I need to get back into that stuff -_-
zach: I cut out the basic shapes out of wood with a jigsaw and used some sort of paper clay( that stuff is ABSOLUTE SHIT to work with) and if your asking if it was a school assignment, nah it was a burfday present for the kid holding it on the right :P
Thanks man, although I wouldn't say im picking it up quick :P some of these are months old and of course I don't show any of the disasters that happen even months before that haha.
Yeah, if you can paint every day you should, if not atleast try to make something ok every week. Id really like to do a painting a day but I don't have the time or any good places for setups unfortunately.
those paintings are quite handsome!
Beautiful .. But why are you painting so small? You are making it so difficult for yourself.
Seth: thanks man : D
Darion: price of big canvas > price of small canvas
price of 150 ml tube of quality paint > price of 37 ml tube of quality paint. I am starting to work on some real large scale stuff though, not just studies. Thankyou :]
A portrait I did as a study and I might end up getting $$$ for it : D
The reference is now in the abyss( my friend[ the model] has a habit of taking off myspace pictures)
That is wonderful. The hair seems a bit unfinished, but overall this is rather stunning. Major props.
That is gorgeous ... personally I love the unfinished quality of the hair. What size is this one? ... And you are right, being an artist is so fucking expensive ...
goddamn that is beautiful, makes me want to paint. and what's that looking at me on the top right.
DancinBoogieMan: Yeah my big focus was on the face( and hair is hard to paint!) so it's obviously not rendered as tight as the face, also half of my excuse was I was trying to work loose. :P Thanks man :]
Darion: This one is 9x12, a litttle bigger than the others haha. Thanksies :]
I ordered Richard Schmid's " ALLA PRIMA All I know about painting" a couple of days ago, and im hooked. The $55 dollars I spent on it was a fraction compared to how helpful it is. I was inspired to try out some direct painting with his advice and style lodged in my head and i came up with this. I painted it in a measly 55 minutes, its 5x7. I took the pic at an angle to reduce the glare but lots of subtle value and hue shifts are still lost. I also don't think its QUITE this saturated; photographing wet paintings is a bitch.

( the reference picture was also taken by me, haha I felt pretty girly taking it)
It's impeccable ... Oddly, your signature accentuates the mood of the painting. Where did you get this book? I'm kinda intrigued ...
Your signature also looks like it says "Painting." That'd be a pretty rad signature.
Awesome painting, too. And photo.
Darion: Thanks a lot man. I ordered it online here:
http://www.richardschmid.com/alla_prima_book_info.htm
Xion: Haha you're right! thanks man :]
I am so tempted to buy that ... Does it only cover oil pants? And would you say that there is a fair thoroughness explaining the painting process or is it more so an expressive explanation of painting? Because I hate when books tell me to paint with my heart and all that shit.
Darion: It is a book largely tailored to oil painting BUT most of the book is just advice and knowledge that will help with any kind of painting, sometimes even drawing. Oh and he hates that too! He doesn't like abstractions, he tells you to stop whining when your painting " doesn't work" or the colors " aren't authentic", he tries to get you to think in more solid terms" are my edges wrong? is this color too warm or too cool to be in this spot? or is it the wrong value?"
Great, i'm gonna cop that shit, thank you!
So I went against the laws of direct painting and went back and tried to adjust some things, It's still a bad photo because It was still kinda wet and the medium I used is creating the glare. Hopefully your eyes is pulled more towards the center of the rose now?

16x20
So I was tired and sad as fuck when I got home from school, and instead of sleeping it away I tried painting a little bit of it out :] felt good. This was done from life, just some chairs in my backyard. Maybe my pain subsided because it was COLD AS FUCK OUTSIDE. Once I got to one milestone into the painting I would go inside and let my hands get their feeling back. I would consider this my first real outdoor alla prima painting. I blame any mistakes or shortcomings in this painting to myself, and any successful parts to Richard Schmid's amazing advice.
Oh and heres a vase. It's got purdy colors. 6x6
This is really neat FF, Freaking love that portrait.
Miguel: Thanks bro :]
just a skull I did in painter X done from memory.
work larger
Hey guys I need some extra special critique on a painting. I plan on it being a piece in my body of work to possibly be put in a portfolio for scholastics. Any general or specific critique you have to make this a better piece I would be very thankful for.

I started it from life, and now i'm working from imagination- although my cousin, the model will be coming up tomorrow night so I might be able to get some more observation in. here's the only "reference" I could scrounge up to help you- different model-similar position and placement:

Thanks bunches
damn i really really like the atmosphere of the piece, very warm. you definitely got a lot of flow and you rarely dry brush.
i'd say throw some more paint in that middle left side, as the canvas (?) looks like it's getting a little worn out and that particular section seems kinda messy compared to the rest of the piece, sorta out of place.
talking about that there ^
i want to see more contrast in some areas, especially around the light. where it hits the wall, in the painting, it doesn't feel like the central point of the piece, which could be entirely up to you. without the reference tho, i want to say it's not saturated enough. it almost starts getting into gray tones and flattening out. i know that part's not finished, tho, and judging by your own judgment and skill of life drawing, you'll likely hit it spot on.
the chair's arms look great. i think the top part of the chair could use some really harsh shadows and more curves emerging from toward the wall, as it's almost flattening out to me. that, or you could have a much darker tone emerging from behind the chair, on the wall.
the face doesn't look like it's a part of the piece for some reason. it kinda looks as if the guy is carrying a lion's head or the perspective is off.
obviouslya lot of this is still rough, and by looking at your previous painting i know you'll go the best direction with this. i really want to see more before saying anything else. i have a hard time critiquing unfinished pieces because i don't want to say what the artist is already thinking of doing with it.
but yeah, keep at it for sure, it has a toasty feeling to it.
toast
gnarf: Thankyou so so much, you have no idea how helpful it was just to hear thoughts on the piece different from the ones floating in my head! Haha it seems you have much more confidence that I'll make this painting good than I do! Your comment about things being rough was especially something that caught me, I was thinking of this piece being very loose but it seems i might have to make some focal points a bit tighter to make things work. The head most likely seems out of place because its actually one of the thinnest parts of the painting- I did it during the first session of the painting and except from a couple highlights I havent touched it since.
Here's how things are looking now, hopefully I haven't gone backwards:

I'm really digging it, especially the color of the walls and that nifty little painting. Gnarf is pretty spot-on about the points he made. I again want to emphasize what he said about the face being a little out-of-place; that was pretty much the first thing I noticed was kind of askew. I think it's mainly in how you painted her hair. It's not really true to the reference and looks a little odd. It's just much too large, and the color isn't doing much to contrast the skin color, or distinguish itself from it. Ah, also, the fabric of her sweatshirt looks a bit unnatural; there are just a few too many 'rolls' of the fabric, and you don't want it to look too 'fluid'. That's an area i whch I would try to stick to the reference more, since it's difficult to improvise how fabric would lay. I would also like to see that picture frame and table on the sides be a little more refined, since when you compare it to something like the hanging painting, it's definitely not as sharp, but I'm assuming that's a section that's still under construction. I also think the lamp could use a little more definition and shading; it's looking a little flat. But overall, I think it has the makings of a great piece; I really like the ambiance of it, and your palette is quite soothing. Keep it up!
Oh and btw, that skull you posted earlier is killer :)
