Thanks for pointing that out Xion, I understand what you see.

Inane, why is that your name? Your post is germane. I think part of the problem is that the method I was trying to use didn't exactly work the with materials. I was trying to do a three tone drawing, where I put down a midtone of vine charcoal, then used a kneaded eraser to try to pull out the whites, then used a harsher charcoal pencil to fill in the blacks. The problem was that the paper wouldnt yield the midtone to my eraser, so I didnt end up getting the white I wanted from it.

Two from yesterday, they're pretty poor, I am very very sick right now.

hey man, these look great. i really dig the style of blocking out shadows and filling them in. the first one on the top of this page especially. i dunno what to tell you, you're doing the right thing by keeping to the life drawings. i think you could definitely work on more foreshortening poses.

Hey there, I don't know if I commented on your painting at conceptart( did you even post it?) but it seems that you're kind of at a cross roads. It neither has a an extremely polished finished nor a series of brush strokes that seem lively or calligraphic. Im also remotely certain that that last sentence neither has a polished abiding of grammar nor a lively disregard of it. Also the eyes, nose, and lips don't seem to create lines that would be parallel to each other ( did I say that the way I meant it?) With all that mean stuff aside this painting is an improvement from the last one I saw of yours. what was the reference? Photo? Life? Both? It definitely shows more of an interest in classy classical ideals which always a good thing in my eyes. :] The grapes don't look very round. Is this done? Do you wish I would shut the fuck up now? oh ok.

Forgotten, thanks for the eye, I've tried to address your crits, I'll have pictures in a few days of the final. This was half from life then the rest from a photo of the subject. I've been interested in 'classy' things ever since I got back from Italy, so thats why.

Zach, thank you I'm glad you like it. I didn't say what it was, it's a depiction of Bacchus.

That's definitely good that you worked from life for part of it. if you can next time you do a painting, if you could get like 2 sessions with the sitter or subject or one long one- spend some time doing a quick color/ value/ composition study focusing on the big shapes that will make the bigger piece work. I did one for a landscape painting recently and found it even more helpful than a photo because it already tells you what colors and values to place where.
I dig the mood of your Bacchus piece- more than the one by Caravaggio ;]
    ...
Does your Bacchus have a lip ring?

Good idea forgotten, I have a painting session set up tomorrow with one of my friends as a model, Ill bring supplies to do a roughing out, I'm all about prep pieces now.

I dig the mood of your Bacchus piece- more than the one by Caravaggio ;]
    ...
Does your Bacchus have a lip ring?

Haha, take that back, Caravaggio would be offended! Thanks. No lip ring, just a little awkward stroke in there I think I ironed out.

SATURN DEVOURING ONE OF HIS OWN CHILDREN by FRANCISCO GOYA in 1819-1823

this was not so much about perfect replication (or I would still be working on it) as the process of filling the page with marks and getting a couple more hours in.

Haha yeah I actually should take that back- or get really good at sword fighting. With his temper he'd probably come back from the dead and kill me D:
That painting by Goya always intrigued me, Id like to do one with a similar concept someday( big monster thing with oils :p)
Im sure you see most of the errors so I won't bother. Filling up sketchbooks and actually putting stuff down is always a good enough reason to draw.

    exams

project I started as an assignment, got permission to work it out over the summer, two weeks was not enough to do justice to a 3 ft by 4ft painting, especially with the composition errors I made. Major revisions on this to come, as in everything but the raised hand, which I like.

    Final Project

    Schools out

That sketchbook drawing might be one of the nicest i've seen from you. It's got your usual energy, but also works with values really well. Your second painting is looking ok, the facial planes are done extremely well. i know its hard to paint across the form all the time, and you really don't have to, but some of the strokes in the chest and shoulder are not working. I have more but its borderline nitpicking and you're not done with it. Will it eventually be in color? Your final project is a very nice painting. Above all of your other work I see in it, potential.

I won the tenth grade painting award this year, that was nice

    ***
re sketchbook: Thanks, wieght training with pen is useful for pencilwork I think, much more tonal.

re painting: Yeah that whole area is gonna go, not happy with the left side of the composition. I think it will be in color in the end. I want to labor over that one for a while.

re final: Thank you, I appreciate that.

Im in a position to work on quite a few painting at once, which should be interesting, I've always wondered if that would help me work.

That portrait is nice, and you have the same attitude I have about portraits( as well as landscapes)
fucking dammit, 10th grade? i'm going to have to work extra hard to make sure you don't catch up with me! Most of your stuff is on par with what I was doing back then, and most of the rest better than!

Looking nice, watch the edges and values of her left arm though, also im a bit confused as to your process and what you're doing with it. Life? Photo? Both? The gesture is working well.

looking good man. the gray tones are working well with the subject's mood. i kinda think you could desaturate that brick color a bit more, tho. dig the way it's looking
